A massive cloud formation stretching nearly 1,000 kilometres across parts of India and Pakistan is set to bring a significant change in weather conditions over the weekend. Satellite images released by the India Meteorological Department indicate a dense cloud band covering northwest regions, pointing toward incoming rain, thunderstorms, and gusty winds.
This sudden shift is being driven by an active Western Disturbance positioned over eastern Iran and adjoining Afghanistan. The system is further strengthened by an upper air cyclonic circulation over eastern Rajasthan and a trough extending toward the east-central Arabian Sea, creating unstable atmospheric conditions.

Rain and Thunderstorms Across Northern States
The evolving weather system is expected to impact several northwestern states, including Jammu and Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh, Punjab, Haryana, and Rajasthan. These regions are likely to experience rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms, lightning, and strong winds.
As the system gradually moves eastward, its effects will spread to Uttarakhand, Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, and Chhattisgarh by Saturday. Intermittent showers and gusty winds are expected to continue across these states over the next few days, with weather activity likely persisting until April 8.
Additional Systems Intensifying Weather Activity
Apart from the main disturbance, a separate trough extending from Jharkhand to southern Chhattisgarh is also contributing to increased convective activity in central and eastern India. Weather experts have also indicated that another Western Disturbance may affect northwest India from April 7 onwards, which could prolong the unsettled conditions.
Delhi-NCR Likely to See Thunderstorms
The weather pattern in Delhi and surrounding NCR areas has already started to shift. A layer of dust has covered parts of the region, signaling increasing instability in the atmosphere.
According to forecasts, thunderstorms accompanied by lightning and gusty winds reaching speeds of 40–50 km/h are likely within the next 24 hours. Light rain or drizzle is also expected to occur over the weekend.
A yellow alert has been issued, indicating one or two spells of light rain along with thunderstorms and winds of 20–30 km/h, which may gust up to 40 km/h, especially during the afternoon and evening hours.
Madhya Pradesh Faces Risk of Hailstorms
Weather officials have warned that several parts of Madhya Pradesh may experience severe conditions, including thunderstorms, lightning, strong winds, and even hailstorms until April 5.
Relief From Heat, But Concerns for Farmers
While the rainfall is expected to bring temporary relief from rising temperatures, it may also pose challenges for farmers. Standing crops could be affected by sudden showers, gusty winds, and hail. Authorities have advised farmers to remain cautious and take preventive measures where possible.
Overall Outlook
The presence of this large cloud band indicates a major weather shift across northern India. While it offers some cooling after increasing heat levels, it also raises the risk of storms and weather-related disruptions. Residents are advised to stay updated with forecasts and take necessary precautions during this period of unstable weather.
